Residents of the Witney Central ward went to the polls on Thursday 14th November to elect a new town councillor for Witney Town Council.
The resignation of Labour councillor Lisa Cherry resulted in a by-election being held for the town ward with representatives from the Conservatives, Labour, Green and Liberal Democrats putting candidates forward for the seat.
With a turnout of 21.80% Conservative candidate and Springfield Oval resident Abdul Mubin was duly elected as the new town councillor for the Witney Central ward winning the seat from Labour. The Conservative Party secured 437 votes followed by Labour on 299, Liberal Democrats on 180, and Greens on 56 votes.
Cllr Abdul Mubin said, "I am so pleased to be elected by the residents of Witney Central to be their new Town Councillor. Standing for election is quite an experience but I am now really looking forward to getting stuck in and making a difference for our community. Thank you to everyone who voted I really appreciate it."
David Edwards-Hughes, who is the Conservative group leader at Witney Town Council and is deputy chairman political of Witney Conservatives said, "I think it's great that Witney Central residents have elected a brilliant guy like Abdul to represent them. Time and time again when we were knocking on doors, we heard how angry residents were with Labour taking the winter fuel payments from pensioners, and how much their council tax has gone up under Labour at the town council.”
The town council now falls into no overall control with Labour losing the majority as both Labour and the Conservatives are on 8 town councillors, and then there is 1 Green councillor.
